The World Umpires Association (WUA) was certified by the National Labor Relations Board on February 24, 2000, as the bargaining agent for Major League Baseball's umpires.
The WUA is a union managed from within, with legal counsel taking an advisory role. At its first meeting in the spring of 2000, the WUA elected a leadership team from among its ranks. The WUA is currently led by President John Hirschbeck, Vice-President Tim Welke, and Secretary-Treasurer Jeff Nelson. The Board of Directors also includes umpires elected to three-, two-, and one-year terms.
