MILWAUKEE — Umpire Joe West worked his 4,000th game Thursday when the Washington Nationals played the Milwaukee Brewers, the 14th man in the majors to do so.
West worked his first major league game in 1976 when he was 23 and later was out of the game for two years in a contract dispute with baseball.
He says he was fortunate to work so much before he came up to the majors to help accelerate his career.
